Running AI coding agents on a dedicated Mac mini

Published Nov 4, 2026 · Updated Nov 4, 2026 · By the MacMiniNode team

Short answer

Yes, you can run AI coding agents such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex on a hosted Mac mini. Install the agent CLI, sign in with your own subscription or API key, run it inside tmux so it survives disconnects, and schedule recurring jobs with launchd. The hosting provider supplies the always-on Mac; the AI usage is billed by the AI provider.

Why run agents on a separate, always-on Mac

  • Long tasks finish even when your laptop sleeps or you switch networks
  • Scheduled work (nightly tests, dependency bumps, report generation) runs on time
  • Agents operate on a machine that is isolated from your personal files, browser sessions, and keys
  • macOS-only tooling, including Xcode and simulators, is available to the agent

Setting up Claude Code

Connect over SSH, install Node.js (for example with Homebrew), then follow Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation to install the CLI and authenticate with your Anthropic account or API key. Clone the repository the agent will work in and confirm git and your test command run before handing work to the agent.

Setting up OpenAI Codex

Install the Codex CLI per OpenAI’s developer documentation and sign in with your OpenAI account or API key. The pattern is the same: SSH in, install, authenticate, clone, verify the toolchain, then run.

Keeping sessions alive and scheduling runs

Start the agent inside tmux: tmux new -s agent, run the agent, then detach with Ctrl-b d. Reattach from any device with tmux attach -t agent to check progress. For recurring jobs, create a launchd agent (see Apple’s launchd guide) or a cron entry that runs the agent non-interactively with a fixed prompt and writes output to a log.

Credentials and safety

  • Give the agent the narrowest Git credentials that work: deploy keys or fine-grained tokens scoped to specific repositories
  • Keep production secrets off the machine unless the task genuinely needs them
  • Review changes before merging; an always-on agent can produce a lot of diff
  • Respect the AI provider’s usage policies and your own Acceptable Use obligations

What it costs

Two separate bills: the Mac mini rental ($129 per month at MacMiniNode) and your AI provider’s subscription or API usage. MacMiniNode does not resell or bundle AI subscriptions and is not affiliated with Anthropic or OpenAI. Heavy agent use can make the AI bill larger than the hardware bill; set spend limits with your provider.

Limits of a 16GB Mac mini for AI work

Cloud-hosted agents (Claude Code, Codex) use the Mac for the repository, tools, and execution, not for model inference, so 16GB is comfortable. Running local models is different: small and medium models that fit in unified memory work with Apple silicon tooling; large models do not fit this configuration.

Is MacMiniNode the right option?

MacMiniNode provides the always-on, dedicated Mac; you provide and operate the agents with your own subscriptions. It suits developers and teams running agents for hours or on schedules, not teams looking for a managed agent platform.
