A remote Mac mini for software development

A hosted Mac mini gives developers a persistent macOS environment they can reach from any machine. Use it over SSH, through VS Code Remote or JetBrains Gateway, or with the full desktop over remote desktop. It stays on, so builds, tests, and agents keep running after you disconnect.

Who it is for

  • Developers on Windows or Linux who need a Mac for Apple toolchains
  • Remote and travelling developers who want one environment that follows them
  • Teams that want a macOS build or test runner that is not someone’s laptop
  • Engineers who keep long-running processes, agents, or services on a machine that never sleeps

What you can run

  • Language runtimes and package managers: Node.js, Python, Go, Rust, Ruby, Java, and more, installed by you
  • Editors and remote tooling: VS Code Remote-SSH, JetBrains Gateway, tmux, or plain SSH
  • Xcode and Apple simulators for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS
  • Containers and databases for local-style development
  • Build agents and test runners for your CI system
  • AI coding agents such as Claude Code or OpenAI Codex, with your own subscription or API key

Why a dedicated remote Mac beats a shared runner

Shared macOS CI minutes are convenient for occasional builds but become expensive and slow for heavy use, and you cannot keep state between jobs. A dedicated machine keeps your caches, dependencies, and simulators warm, and you decide what runs on it.

Because the hardware is yours alone, a long test suite or a large compile does not compete with other customers.

Typical developer setup

  1. STEP 1

    Connect over SSH

Add the host from your dashboard to your SSH config, then use VS Code Remote-SSH or JetBrains Gateway for a full IDE experience.

  2. STEP 2

    Install your toolchain

Homebrew, runtimes, and editors install as they would on any Mac. Administrator access is included, subject to security and licensing requirements.

  3. STEP 3

    Keep things running

Use tmux, launchd, or your CI agent so builds, tests, and agents continue after you close your laptop.

  4. STEP 4

Use the desktop when you need it

Open remote desktop for Xcode’s GUI, simulators, or any app that needs a screen.

How remote access works

Your Mac mini stays powered on in our facility. You connect to it over the internet from a Mac, Windows PC, Linux machine, or tablet using two supported methods: SSH for the terminal, and remote desktop for the full macOS interface.

Connection details and step-by-step instructions appear inside your signed-in dashboard once the machine is ready; we never send credentials by plain email. Your files, tools, and sessions persist between connections, so you can disconnect and pick up where you left off.

Setup and onboarding

  1. STEP 1

    Create an account

Sign up with your email or Google account and verify your address. No payment is collected at this step.

  2. STEP 2

    Request your Mac

Tell us how you plan to use it and accept the terms. We review every request by hand.

  3. STEP 3

    We prepare the machine

A team member assigns a dedicated Mac mini to you, installs a clean copy of macOS, and configures secure remote access.

  4. STEP 4

    Start your subscription and connect

When it is ready we email you. You set up payment, billing starts at activation, and your connection details appear in the dashboard.

Real limitations and requirements

  • Machines are prepared by people, not provisioned instantly. Expect days, not minutes; your dashboard shows each stage.
  • One customer per computer. Sharing a machine among several end users, reselling access, or sublicensing is not permitted.
  • Administrator access is included but subject to security and licensing requirements: you cannot disable the management controls we rely on, and macOS use must follow Apple’s software license terms.
  • Permitted use is developer and business computing: software development, testing, CI, automation, and AI coding agents. See the Acceptable Use Policy.
  • No physical access to the hardware, and no hardware changes (memory and storage are fixed at the configuration you rent).
  • Third-party subscriptions are not included: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, the Apple Developer Program, and any licensed software are yours to bring.
  • You are responsible for your own backups. When a rental ends, the storage is securely erased before the hardware is reassigned.

Questions about this

Can I use VS Code Remote or JetBrains Gateway with the Mac mini?

Yes. Both work over the SSH access we provide. Add the connection details from your dashboard and open the remote folder as you would on any Linux or macOS host.

Is 16GB of memory enough for development?

For most web, backend, and mobile development, including Xcode with a simulator, 16GB of unified memory is sufficient. Very large builds, multiple simulators at once, or heavy local machine-learning work may benefit from more memory, which we do not offer yet.

Can I run Docker on the hosted Mac?

Container tools that run on macOS can be installed by you. Note that on macOS they run Linux containers inside a lightweight virtual machine, as they do on any Mac, so resource usage is shared with the rest of your work.
