// Xcode and iOS development
Rent a Mac mini for Xcode and iOS development
Xcode only runs on macOS, which is why developers on Windows and Linux rent Macs. A MacMiniNode Mac mini runs Xcode natively on Apple silicon, including the simulators, so you can build and test Apple-platform apps from any computer. You sign in with your own Apple ID and Apple Developer Program membership.
Who it is for
- Cross-platform teams (React Native, Flutter, .NET MAUI, Kotlin Multiplatform) that need a Mac for the iOS side
- Windows or Linux developers learning Swift or shipping an iOS app
- Teams that need a dedicated macOS CI machine for iOS builds and UI tests
- Developers whose personal Mac is too old or too busy for current Xcode releases
What works on the hosted Mac mini
- Xcode installed from the Mac App Store or Apple Developer downloads
- iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS simulators on Apple silicon
- Command-line builds with xcodebuild, fastlane, and CI agents
- Code signing, TestFlight uploads, and App Store submission with your own Apple Developer Program membership
- Cross-platform toolchains such as React Native, Flutter, and Kotlin Multiplatform
How you use Xcode remotely
For the Xcode GUI and the simulator, connect over remote desktop; the full macOS interface is available. For builds, tests, and automation, SSH is faster: run xcodebuild or fastlane from your terminal, or point your CI system at the machine as a self-hosted runner.
Simulators run on the Mac mini, so they do not depend on your local hardware. Testing on physical iPhones or iPads requires devices connected to a Mac you control; a hosted machine cannot attach your local devices.
Requirements and limits for Xcode work
- An Apple ID and, for signing and distribution, an Apple Developer Program membership. These are not included in the rental.
- Xcode downloads are large; the 256GB SSD comfortably holds Xcode and several simulator runtimes, but keep an eye on derived data and archives.
- Interactive simulator use over remote desktop depends on your connection quality; command-line builds over SSH are unaffected.
- Physical-device testing is not possible on a hosted Mac.
Setup and onboarding
- STEP 1
Create an account
Sign up with your email or Google account and verify your address. No payment is collected at this step.
- STEP 2
Request your Mac
Tell us how you plan to use it and accept the terms. We review every request by hand.
- STEP 3
We prepare the machine
A team member assigns a dedicated Mac mini to you, installs a clean copy of macOS, and configures secure remote access.
- STEP 4
Start your subscription and connect
When it is ready we email you. You set up payment, billing starts at activation, and your connection details appear in the dashboard.
Real limitations and requirements
- Machines are prepared by people, not provisioned instantly. Expect days, not minutes; your dashboard shows each stage.
- One customer per computer. Sharing a machine among several end users, reselling access, or sublicensing is not permitted.
- Administrator access is included but subject to security and licensing requirements: you cannot disable the management controls we rely on, and macOS use must follow Apple’s software license terms.
- Permitted use is developer and business computing: software development, testing, CI, automation, and AI coding agents. See the Acceptable Use Policy.
- No physical access to the hardware, and no hardware changes (memory and storage are fixed at the configuration you rent).
- Third-party subscriptions are not included: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, the Apple Developer Program, and any licensed software are yours to bring.
- You are responsible for your own backups. When a rental ends, the storage is securely erased before the hardware is reassigned.
Questions about this
Can I build an iOS app from Windows using a rented Mac mini?
Yes. You develop from Windows, connect to the Mac mini over SSH or remote desktop, and run Xcode or xcodebuild there. Many cross-platform frameworks support this workflow directly.
Does the rental include an Apple Developer Program membership?
No. The membership is tied to you or your organization and is required for code signing, TestFlight, and App Store distribution. You enrol with Apple directly.
Can I use the Mac mini as a CI runner for iOS builds?
Yes. Install the runner agent for GitHub Actions, GitLab, Bitrise, or your preferred CI system as a self-hosted runner. The machine is always on and dedicated, so caches and simulators persist between jobs.
